Links To Work

sunfish is a YouTube channel for videos I put effort into. They are best described as 'video essays,' but I'm not really a fan of that title.

This will probably get rebranded eventually. Watch this space.

Writing

This is the longest part of the process, by far.

I do all of my writing in Obsidian, a markdown editing tool. Concurrently, there's about... 10+ drafts for videos, each will at minimum 600 words. I'll finish them eventually.

Screenshot of my Obsidian workspace showing a huge list of video script drafts.

The videos are meant to be reflections on things I've done/experienced, and not really reactionary takes to recent things. It's kind of anti-YouTube, but I think it makes better stories.

Some of them have heavy research, some don't. It depends. The Steam Deck video is basically all anecdotes, whereas the the 'Overwhelming Internet' video has multiple sources.

Shooting

This part is pretty quick. I basically improvise any B-roll I need for what's being said in the script, unless directly specified for a demonstration, or a bit, or something.

The talking heads shots are usually in my room, but I'm trying to switch it up a bit.

In short, I'm basically just making it as I go.

Editing

Editing takes either two nanoseconds or two millenia. I've gotten pretty good at Final Cut, so stitching together clips and images is a pretty quick process.

The videos aren't really funny yet. I'm working on it.

I'm still working on mixing audio, cause the last few videos were of... questionable quality
